Challenge

Sharesies was spending hundreds of hours annually on manual carbon measurement each year. The finance team faced months of data collection, calculation errors, and back-and-forth consultations with their existing firm. They needed a solution that wouldn't pull team members away from core business activities.

Solution

CarbonInvoice automated Sharesies' carbon footprint measurement through its Xero integration, eliminating manual work. Having their footprint measured and reported allowed them to meet B Corp recertification requirements while funding 1,900 native trees in Wellington, Auckland, and Sydney—communities where their team work, live and play..

Results

Eliminated hundreds of hours of manual work annually. The finance team went from months of data collection to automated measurement through Xero, freeing them to focus on business growth and customer service.

Sustainability initiatives strengthened their values-driven culture. The team participated in Planting Action Days at Catchpool Valley and Papakura Stream, creating authentic connection between their work and environmental impact.

Met B Corp recertification deadline with comprehensive environmental documentation, supporting evidence of community engagement. Also provided realistic carbon intensity metrics for internal reduction initiatives.

Clients and partners of Sharesies get to do business with a company living and breathing being for profit, for purpose.

About Sharesies

Sharesies is a wealth development platform and the largest investment platform in New Zealand and Australia, with over 850,000 customers. Their purpose is creating financial empowerment for everyone, and they operate as a certified B Corp (since 2019) with a “for profit, for purpose" philosophy.

The company is deeply values-driven, living by three core values which guide the actions of leaders and employees. As Chief Commercial Officer Toni Moyes explains, "Sharesies is a very values driven business. We have three values that we always live by, which are Chase remarkable, In it together and Always care."

This values-led approach attracts top talent who want to make a meaningful impact. Senior Counsel Meredith Pearson reflects, "Working for a purpose led company, particularly a very strongly held purpose led company, was one of the reasons that attracted me to Sharesies in the first place. I don't just want to do a good job somewhere. I want to do a good job at a company that's doing a good job and living and breathing its purpose."

Like many growing businesses, Sharesies needed solutions that would allow their team to focus on high-value work growing their business and looking after their customers and meeting their environmental and B Corp commitments.

Challenge

Manual carbon measurement processes were consuming hundreds of hours annually

Sharesies had been measuring and offsetting their carbon footprint since 2020 using a consulting firm, but the manual process had become a significant drain on internal resources. B-Keeper Samantha Pigott and the Sharesies Finance Team were spending hundreds of hours each year on manual data collection, back-and-forth consultations, and dealing with calculation errors and reporting inconsistencies.

The existing approach required several months of calendar time, with substantial administrative overhead pulling key team members away from their core responsibilities. The process involved calculating minor emissions sources manually, dealing with reporting timelines that didn't align with Sharesies March 31 financial year reporting, and managing unrealistic reduction expectations based on 2020 baseline data which was artificially low due to more work from home, less travel.

Samantha explains the challenge they faced: "We looked into the options for us as a business to become more sustainable and more responsible, and they took quite a bit of time, effort and energy from at least one or two people within the business to champion that through. And we just didn't have the capacity."

At this point, with their B Corp recertification approaching in June 2025, Sharesies needed a solution that would maintain their environmental commitments while freeing up their team to focus on what they do best.

Solution

CarbonInvoice delivered automated measurement with meaningful local impact

CarbonInvoice offered Sharesies exactly what they needed. The platform provided a streamlined approach with 3-minute initial setup by connecting their Xero accounting data, eliminating the need for extensive consulting and manual calculations.

The solution aligned perfectly with Sharesies' values-driven culture, offering comprehensive coverage of their carbon footprint equivalent to their previous approach, but without the administrative burden. Instead of purchasing carbon credits for projects they'd never see, Sharesies could fund new native trees in the very communities where they operate.

Eliminating hundreds of hours of manual work

The transformation was immediate and dramatic. Instead of Samantha and her team spending months on manual data collection, the entire carbon measurement process became automated through their existing Xero system.

Toni Moyes describes the impact: "It means that instead of taking hours or days or even weeks to try to understand our carbon footprint, we can just get our finance team to plug in the Xero data and it's calculated. It's all there. It's based on real activities which are accurately represented."

Samantha adds: "It was great to see it automated, so connecting straight into Xero and just automatically pulling the information and then working through it with them to make sure that it did align to what we deemed as correct, really saved me a lot of manual labour of like weighing rubbish and doing like head counts and like getting all the electricity bills."

Creating tangible environmental impact in their community

Rather than purchasing distant carbon credits, Sharesies chose to fund native trees that their team could actually visit and engage with. Their carbon footprint was equivalent to 1,900 native trees, which they could fund through CarbonInvoice's local tree planting programs.

The approach resonated strongly with the team's values. Samantha reflects: "By getting out here and planting them today it's that whole picture. It's not just buying some carbon credits for planting trees that we've never seen."

The company organised an exclusive Planting Action Day where team members could participate directly in environmental restoration, creating a powerful connection between their daily work and environmental impact.

Supporting B Corp recertification without the administrative burden

The streamlined measurement and reporting directly supported Sharesies meeting their B Corp recertification timeline. CarbonInvoice's automated approach provided all the documentation needed for environmental scoring while eliminating the time-intensive consultation process.

This efficiency was crucial for meeting their June 2025 recertification deadline while allowing the team to focus on other B Corp requirements and core business activities.

How Sharesies is benefiting

The partnership has delivered operational efficiency, cultural alignment, and meaningful environmental action

Team engagement through authentic sustainability action

The sustainability initiatives have become a significant cultural win for Sharesies. The team embraced the opportunity to participate in hands-on environmental restoration through their own Planting Action Day at Catchpool Valley in August 2025. The Auckland-based team also participated joining their supplier Tracksuit’s Planting Action Day in September 2025 at the Papakura Stream Restoration Project.

The experience strengthened the company's values-driven culture, with team members able to see the direct impact of their environmental commitments. As Toni notes: "At Sharesies, we are helping people invest for their future. We all want to create a better future and a better world. What we're doing here with CarbonInvoice is also a huge part of that, and in a way, there's no better investment and no better asset than our natural environment."

Operational efficiency and resource optimisation

The partnership eliminated hundreds of hours of manual work annually, allowing Samantha and the finance team to focus on higher-value activities supporting business growth and customer service.

The seamless integration with their existing Xero system meant no disruption to daily operations while achieving comprehensive carbon measurement. The automated approach removed the need for extensive consulting relationships and back-and-forth data requests.

Fit for purpose reporting

CarbonInvoice also provided more fitting reporting on metrics like carbon intensity per employee, which for Sharesies as a growing business is both realistic and practically useful for motivating staff with internal carbon reduction initiatives.

Values alignment with fellow purpose-driven organisation

The partnership created natural alignment between two Wellington-based, values-led organisations. CEO Carlos Chambers explains: "The Sharesies, CarbonInvoice partnership is super exciting with both organisations being for profit and for purpose, and being values led so there's really strong parallels there between the two."

This alignment extended beyond the business relationship to create authentic storytelling opportunities about environmental responsibility and community impact.

Samantha summarises the transformation:

“Partnering with CarbonInvoice makes our carbon reporting simple, tangible, and authentic.By automating the measurement of our footprint, we avoid manual spreadsheets and errors, freeing up resource to focus on reducing our emissions and planting native trees in Wellington, Auckland, and Sydney - the communities where we live and work!As part of this partnership, our staff have taken part in local planting days, creating great engagement and connecting our people directly to the positive outcomes of our investment.”
